Change of Circumstances, Withdrawing or Suspending Studies

At certain stages throughout a student’s time at University or before they start, their circumstances could change – affecting what financial help they could get from Student Finance England.

Before the start of their course students can use their online account to make changes to:

  • their choice of course
  • their choice of university or college
  • the details of their placement
  • the amount of loan they’re applying for
  • their personal details

After their course has started, the student can still update their personal details online but if they intend to change their course, repeat a year, suspend their studies or if the fee they’re being charged changes, they’ll need to ask the University to inform Student Finance England.

Making changes to your course or mode of study can have an impact on the funding options available to you. You should book an appointment with one of the University’s Money Advisers to discuss your options. Appointments can be booked via firstpoint.

If a student decides to suspend or withdraw from their studies, they’ll need to let the University know immediately. The University will then notify the student’s Student Funding provider who will decide if their existing student finance should continue.

Students withdrawing from their course before the end of a year may still have a liability to pay tuition fees.

Student Finance received for a previous year (or more) of study can sometimes be disregarded and the entitlement reinstated if a student was unable to complete the year or years in question because of Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR).

Compelling Personal Reasons

Compelling Personal Reasons could be, for example, that the student was unwell or a close family member was unwell and required their attention. Sometimes the student will have withdrawn from the course or they may have remained in attendance but CPR meant that they could not fully focus on study and failed modules.

Reinstatement of financial eligibility is particularly crucial to those students not receiving full funding for their current course because of previous time in Higher Education.

The funding provider eg Student Finance England (SFE) will require confirmation from a professional that the student was unable to complete the course or year(s) in question. The University Money Advisers can send the letter of confirmation to the funding provider with a covering letter asking for reinstatement on grounds of CPR or students can send the letter themselves (being sure to include their student finance Customer Reference Number).

It is important to note that proving CPR is not enough; proof must be provided that the CPR meant that the course or year(s) could not reasonably have been completed.
