If you are considering taking a break from your studies, there are various options available depending on your circumstances, and specialist support is on hand to help make sure you are making an informed decision.

Ad Hoc Absence
We know that on occasion there may be unavoidable circumstances that mean you miss a session. In this event, please contact your module leader as soon as possible, so that the absence can be accurately recorded. For Nursing & Midwifery students, please complete the Authorised Absence form from Registry Services.
If you are dealing with personal circumstances that are impacting your attendance, it’s encouraged to keep your personal academic tutor informed, as attendance is monitored by your course team. You can also speak to firstpoint so that we can help you access relevant support.
If an absence affects attendance at a live assessment or examination, check the mitigating circumstances page for further advice.

As a student you are expected to participate fully, engage actively with learning opportunities and take responsibility for your learning. Attendance is monitored and recorded by your course team and persistent failure to attend or engage may result in you being withdrawn from your course and so it’s important to be aware of and follow the university’s attendance policy.

If you need to permanently withdraw from your course, you can find further information regarding the next steps and support available on the Suspend or Withdraw from Study webpages. There is also a temporary option, if you would like to take a break, but keep your place on the course held for you to return to.

If you are hoping to take a short break from your course (e.g. one week), you must consult with your course leader and obtain their approval in advance. You will need to complete the ‘Temporary Leave of Absence’ form from Registry Services.

If you need to put a pause on your studies and take a break of up to one academic year we recommend looking at the temporary withdrawal information. Remember, there is lots of support available to help look at your options.
